As time passes you think more and more about the past-how it shaped you, and how you shaped it. Sometimes you miss things-people and places. Sometimes it’s as simple as voices, sounds and smells. Almost always it’s complex-the feelings all those pieces conjure up. “I Keep It All Back There With You” is a song about wanting to go back, but not being sure of what you might find when you get there.
The video takes place in three of my favorite places in the world-the Jersey Shore, Brown’s diner and inside my 1974 Ford F100! I shot it with my good friend and collaborator Jon Morgan. Jon found the vintage Jersey Shore footage. A special thank you to Joe Verderosa and John Melito for graciously sharing it with us. As a child in the 60’s, I spent many summers at my Grandparents house in Beach Haven West, NJ. If our parents had taken home movies of us, I’m certain it would have been similar to the vintage video we used here. The juxta-position of the new and old footage helps tell the story of “I Keep It All Back There With You”. I continue to visit the Jersey Shore as often as I can. I find being there, and by the ocean inspiring.
This video was directed by my long time NJ friend Danny Clinch. He has also directed videos for Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson and Dave Matthews.
We shot it all in one afternoon/evening on the Jersey Shore. I was the only person on the boardwalk in July in a black suit. We were eating hot dogs, onion rings and drinking cold beer on the boardwalk by 8:00pm that night.
